Harvard Stem Cell Institute
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) 2007

Intern Application Information

This program represents an exciting opportunity for undergraduates to gain hands-on experience in stem cell research while working in a Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) laboratory under the supervision of an experienced researcher.  These internships will be for a period of 10 weeks (or longer by agreement with the Mentor and Principal Investigator) during the summer of 2007.  Students are expected to work full time in the host laboratory for the duration of the internship.  The stipend will be $4,320. After acceptance into the program, students will discuss specific projects and details with their Mentor.

The goal of this program is to provide undergraduate students with a research experience they may otherwise not have and to expose them to different options within the scientific arena, through a stem cell seminar series and a career pathways presentation. The interns themselves will present their summer research findings in the SURP Symposium open to all participating in the program.  Students must express a strong interest in stem cell biology, but not necessarily have previous lab experience.
HSCI was launched in April 2004 and comprises a network of researchers throughout the Harvard community including the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Medical School and affiliated hospitals. Our mission is to support all forms of stem cell research with a particular emphasis on areas with the potential to improve human health.
Please note that HSCI does not provide or arrange housing.

ELIGIBILITY

Any undergraduate who will not have graduated by June 2007 are eligible to apply. Foreign students are responsible for obtaining a valid student visa prior to the start of the program. Some background in biological science is essential, and this should preferably include Harvard courses BS50 (freshmen) and BS52 and/or BS54 (sophomores, juniors), or the equivalent. Previous research lab experience is desirable but not essential.
Anyone who has previously participated in one SURP and still meets the eligibility requirements may apply again. You may repeat the program only once. Please submit a new application in full, as we will not pull your previous one.
